History West Wight Group
Group Leader - Wendy Williams - 872276
Location - Freshwater
We are a friendly group of around ten people who normally meet
at 2.30pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month (except
August) at the Conservative
Club, Queens Road, Freshwater.
Our studies are informal and include opportunities for members
to talk about historical topics that are of special interest to
them, but for most of the time our meetings are based on a book.
We have just finished reading Isabella She-Wolf of France, Queen
of England by Alison Weir. Like Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabella was
a key political figure in the Middle Ages. We noted that her lifetime
was a period of greed, political manoeuvring, skulduggery and infidelity
and concluded that nothing much has changed in over 700 years!
We have now moved on around 550 years to begin our look at the
lives of Queen Victoria's nine children as given by John Van Der
Kirste in his book Queen Victoria's Children. Although the children
were very different characters they remained a close-knit family.
They married into European royal families. Their loyalties were
divided and political controversy dominated their lives. They made
their individual contributions to public life in Britain and overseas.
