Welcome to the Isle of Wight U3A
The Isle of Wight U3A
started in 1992. At that time we were told we would be lucky to
reach 100 members. With a population of approximately 130,000 we
now have over 450 members and are still growing!
Despite the term 'University' there are no exams or degrees. It
means for us simply a desire to learn for its own sake and to share
the company of others.
Our members are mainly people who are retired, or planning to
retire, or not in full time employment.
We have a local committee with members
taking on various roles and in turn giving support to the group
leaders and their members.
Our groups are very varied ranging from
languages, literature, bridge, dancing, art, history, IT, plus many
more, and the list is still growing. The groups are entirely run
and organised by members and there are no restrictions on the subject
matter of groups, provided there is support for it.
Four times a year we hold a free general meeting
at the Riverside Centre, Newport. Visitors are welcome to come along
to listen to interesting speakers, meet members and enjoy free refreshments.
Once a year we have an 'Open Day' which is open to members and
non members. Group leaders run stalls so that they can share with
everyone what goes on within their own groups. This is a very successful
day and we inevitably increase our membership.
Four times a year we publish a newsletter
which is circulated to all our members. This gives lots of information
about our groups and keeps everyone informed.
Interested in joining us? The annual membership fee is 10
single or 17 per couple. This gives access to as many groups
as you wish (provided they have places).
For all general enquiries please contact Susan Casey (Secretary)
on 01983 614095 and membership enquiries only to Georgina Marsh
on 01983 564217.
